Online LTC Course: What You Need Before Starting

Understanding What You Need for Your Texas LTC Class

Many new students wonder what they should bring to a Texas License to Carry (LTC) class. Having the right items helps the class run smoothly and keeps you safe during the range qualification. When you arrive prepared, you feel more confident and ready to learn. At South Texas Shooting & Safety School, we make the process simple so every student in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend knows exactly what to expect.

The LTC class includes classroom instruction and a shooting qualification. Because of this, you need both learning materials and range equipment. Bringing the correct items ensures you stay comfortable, follow safety rules, and complete the course without delays.

Items You Must Bring to the Classroom Portion

The classroom portion teaches Texas carry laws, use of force, conflict avoidance, and safe handgun handling. To stay organized and ready to learn, you should bring:

Classroom Essentials

  • A valid government‑issued ID
  • A notebook or paper
  • A pen or pencil
  • Water or a drink with a lid
  • Any required paperwork or confirmation email

These items help you follow along, take notes, and stay comfortable throughout the lesson.

Items You Must Bring to the Range Qualification

The range portion is where you complete the shooting qualification required by Texas DPS. Safety is the top priority, so you must bring the correct gear.

Range Essentials

  • A handgun (semi‑auto or revolver)
  • 50 rounds of ammunition
  • Eye protection
  • Ear protection
  • Closed‑toe shoes
  • A hat with a brim (recommended for safety)

If you do not have a handgun, contact us ahead of time. We can help you with options so you can complete your qualification without stress.

Training That Supports Your Success

Your LTC class is taught by an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor, NRA CCW Instructor, NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, and Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship Instructor. With this level of experience, you receive clear guidance on what to bring, how to prepare, and how to safely complete your qualification.

1. Do I need to bring my own handgun to the LTC class?

You may bring your own handgun, but it may not be required. If you need help, contact us before class so we can discuss available options.

2. How much ammunition should I bring?

You should bring at least 50 rounds of ammunition for the shooting qualification. Depending on the DPS certified LTC instructor you choose, you may be allowed to retest if you do not pass the first shooting qualification, so bring along at least one extra box of 50 rounds.

3. What should I wear to the range?

Wear closed‑toe shoes, comfortable clothing, safety eyewear, hearing protection, and a hat with a brim. These items help protect you from hot brass and improve safety.
