Texas Constitutional Carry

Texas constitutional carry is a law that lets most adults in Texas carry a handgun without getting a permit. It went into effect on September 1, 2021. Under this law, anyone 21 or older who is legally allowed to own a gun can carry it open or concealed in public. They do not have to take a class, pass a test, or get a License to Carry (LTC).

The idea behind constitutional carry is that the Second Amendment already gives people the right to carry a firearm, so the state should not require extra steps. But the law still has limits. People with certain criminal records, protective orders, or gang involvement cannot carry. Someone who is intoxicated also cannot carry a handgun in public.

Texas still has many prohibited places where guns are not allowed. These include schools, polling places, court buildings, bars that make most of their money from alcohol, sporting events, hospitals, and secured airport areas. Carrying a gun in these places can lead to serious legal trouble.

Even though a permit is not required, many Texans still choose to get an LTC. An LTC can make buying a gun faster, allow carry in more places, and is recognized in many other states.

Overall, constitutional carry gives Texans more freedom to carry a handgun, but it also keeps important safety rules in place. People must still follow the law, stay aware of restricted areas, and handle firearms responsibly.
