Texas LTC Requirements

Understanding the Texas LTC Requirements

The Texas License to Carry (LTC) is an important step for anyone who wants to carry a handgun legally in Texas. Many people in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend choose the LTC because it provides confidence, legal protection, and clear guidelines for responsible carry. At South Texas Shooting & Safety School, we train new shooters, women, seniors, and anyone who wants to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

Texas law sets clear requirements for getting your LTC. These rules help ensure that every applicant understands handgun safety, Texas carry laws, and the responsibilities that come with carrying a firearm. When you follow these requirements, you build a strong foundation for safe and confident carry.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Texas LTC, you must meet several basic standards. These requirements apply to all applicants across the state.

Age Requirement

You must be 21 years old or older. Active-duty military members and veterans may apply at 18 years old.

Legal Status

You must be a legal resident of Texas or a person who has lived in the state for at least six months. You must also be allowed to possess a firearm under federal and state law.

Criminal History

Texas requires a clean criminal record. You cannot have:

  • Felony convictions
  • Certain Class A or B misdemeanors
  • Pending criminal charges
  • Recent chemical dependency issues

These rules help ensure safe and responsible carry throughout Texas.

Training Requirements

Texas requires every LTC applicant to complete approved training. South Texas Shooting & Safety School offers the official online Texas LTC course, which meets all DPS standards.

Online Course

The online LTC course teaches:

You can complete the online course at your own pace, which makes it easy for busy schedules.

Range Qualification

After finishing the online course, you must complete a shooting qualification with a Texas DPS certified instructor of your choosing. At South Texas Shooting & Safety School, your qualification is supervised by an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor, NRA CCW Instructor, NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, and Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship Instructor.

Submitting Your Application

Once you complete training, you submit your application through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). You will:

  • Provide fingerprints
  • Upload your LTC certificate
  • Pay the state fee
  • Wait for DPS approval

Most applications are processed within a few weeks.
