The Four Universal Firearms Safety Rules

1. Treat every firearm as loaded

Assume the gun is ready to fire, even if you “think” it’s empty. This mindset prevents careless handling, surprises, and accidents.

2. Never point the gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy

This is muzzle control. If the muzzle stays pointed in a safe direction, even a mistake won’t hurt anyone.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot

Rest your finger straight along the frame. Only move to the trigger when your sights are on target and you’ve made the decision to fire.

4. Know your target and what’s beyond it

Bullets travel far and go through things. You must know:

  • What you’re aiming at
  • What’s behind it
  • What’s around it

This rule protects everyone beyond your intended target.
