Understanding the Texas LTC
Getting your Texas License to Carry (LTC) is a simple and straightforward process. Many new gun owners feel unsure at first, but once you learn the steps, you see how easy it is to complete. The LTC gives you important benefits, including legal protection, faster firearm purchases, and carry privileges in many other states. Even with permit less carry in Texas, the LTC remains a smart choice for responsible gun owners.
At South Texas Shooting & Safety School, we proudly serve Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend. Training is led by an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor, NRA CCW Instructor, NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, and Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship Instructor, so you learn safely and confidently.
Step 1 – Meet the Basic Requirements
Before you begin, you must meet the Texas DPS requirements. You must be at least 18 years old, have no felony convictions, and be legally allowed to own a firearm. Most people already meet these requirements, so this step is usually quick.
To help new shooters understand these rules, you can also visit our Texas LTC Class page for more details.
Step 2 – Complete Your LTC Training
Online Course
The easiest way to start is by taking the online LTC course. It teaches Texas laws, safety rules, and carry responsibilities. You can complete it at your own pace.
Shooting Qualification
After finishing the online portion, you complete the shooting qualification with a certified instructor. At South Texas Shooting & Safety School, we guide you through every step, even if you are a brand‑new shooter. Many students choose our private lessons or Basic Pistol class before their LTC qualification to build confidence.
Step 3 – Submit Your Application to Texas DPS
Once your training is complete, you submit your application online through the Texas Department of Public Safety. You upload your documents, pay the state fee, and schedule your fingerprint appointment. After DPS reviews your information, they mail your LTC directly to your home. Most students receive their license within 2–6 weeks.
Step 4 – Continue Your Training
Getting your LTC is only the beginning. Good training helps you stay confident and responsible. Many students continue with NRA courses such as PPITH, PPOTH, and NRA CCW to build stronger defensive skills.
How long does it take to get a Texas LTC?
Most students receive their LTC within 2–6 weeks after submitting their fingerprints and application. Processing times depend on DPS workload.
Do I need my own handgun for the LTC shooting test?
No. South Texas Shooting & Safety School can provide a handgun for your qualification for a fee. Many new shooters use this option during their first class.
Is the LTC still useful if Texas has Constitution carry?
Yes. The LTC offers legal advantages, protects you in more locations, and gives you reciprocity in many other states. Most responsible gun owners still choose to get their LTC.
